We all see furniture made of recycled wood nowadays. I’m sure you are wondering where this wood comes from, so you will be able to create some yourself too!
Here a list of places where you can find wood to recycle.
1. Railway sleepers
Railway sleepers were used to hold the iron track for a railway. They are often bought in eastern-europe countries and can be up to 150 years old. These sleepers are a good source for recycled wood, but beware of the sleepers that have tar on them, you don’t want to use these to make furniture.
Railway sleepers come in different sizes, depending on where they come from, or what they were used for.
The length is between 2.4 and 3.0 meter.
The width is between 20 and 25 cm.
The thickness is between 12.5 and 15 cm.
In the old days, the sides of a truck was made of wood. This wood would be painted several times when going to a new owner, or when needed. This creates a thick layer of paint which looks very recycled after sanding off parts.
The wood species is different per truck.
The length can be up to 4 meter. The width is always different, but sometimes can be up to 25cm. The thickness will be between 2 and 3 cm.
A lot of recycled boat furniture comes from Sout Easy Asia. The broken boats are abandoned by the fishermen. They either get a new wooden boat, or a steel version. The wooden boats usually have several layers of paint on them.
There is also a lot of furniture sold as made from recycled boats, but is made of new wood.
In South East Asia most wooden fishing boats are made of teak wood.
The length of a boat can be up to 12 meter. Not all parts are straight, so not all can be recycled as you need.
Older houses were mostly made of wood. And even nowadays a lot of construction work can still be in wood. Most wooden houses will have been farm houses or barns. In more tropical areas wooden houses can be found until today
You can find of course any different size depending on which part the wood was used for.
5. Wooden Pallets
Wooden pallets are used to transport products. Usually made of the cheapest wood, connected with iron nails. After the products are delivered pallets are often thrown away. It is easy to find free wooden pallets.
Most cheap wooden pallets are made of pine wood. Higher quality pallets can be made of a stronger wood, but they are used again in most cases
Slats on a pallet are around 1 meter long, up to 10cm wide, and up to 2.5cm thick
